My wife wanted a concealed handgun for protection, so we began to shop. We looked at Keltec, Ruger and Smith & Wesson. These were the smallest landscape pistols available. The Keltec felt like a toy and didn't really fit her hand well. The LCP by Ruger impressed both of us, and I ended up buying the LCP as a boot gun for the motorcycle. She however fell in love with the feel of the Smith & Wesson airweight 642 with the Crimson Trace grips and laser. It really fit her hand well and was easy for her to grip. Even though the little LCP would have been a smaller caliber handgun, the choice was clear from the beginning.
Off to the shooting range we go. Loaded and ready to shoot. First thing.... there is no safety on either one of these guns. They are hammerless (enclosed hammer) and the safety is pulling the trigger to shoot. This is a big plus, they will not snag on something creating a potentially unsafe situation. Loading was easy on both, although the S&W loads quicker with its revolver style than the clip. I ended up buying an additional clip for the LCP for $37.00 from Ruger.
Sighting in is a snap with the S&W using the Crimson Trace Laser dot sites. It shoots pretty true at 5 yards and will perform at 10 yards, if you can keep your concentration and hand still enough to hit the target. My wife is steadier than I am, and bullseyed the targer at 5 yards 3 out of 5 times. Wow, I'm impressed. I hit the head, neck and body 4 times with the LCP, and once in the bulls eye. Says something for the laser targeting.
The kick was dramatically different between the two. The little LCP, barely has a kick but the S&W definitely tells you its a .38. Gripped correctly, it didn't kick any harder than our Ruger Special 6 .357 that weighs about 4 pounds. I was impressed. This is really a breeze to shoot. Also, there is nothing to jam up. My LCP jammed on some reloads but did shoot fine with American Eagle brand shells. I have ready that the desired shell is Remington White box.
All in all, I would give this little gun a 10. It packs lots of knock down power and is accurate at the distance most bad things occur. I feel better knowing that my wife has the protection she needs. There is an increasing number of bad situations happening since the economy has gown sour and gasoling has gotten higher. Attitudes are flared and logic is out the door.
If nothing else, just popping the laser dot on someone would be enough to make them thing twice, but I do know that if the situation presented itself, this S&W would afford true power to come out alive.
Great gun, and thanks to Ruger
